EISHIN RYŪ
Shoden Waza
(Tachi)

These are the standing versions practiced in the place of the Shoden Seiza Waza.



1. Mae (facing the front)

Stand erect with the hands at the side.
Take three cleansing breaths
On the third breath, move the hands to the saya and tsukagashira performing Koiguchi no kirikata
Push the sword toward the opponent's face, dropping into iaigoshi
Perform a nukitsuke, Cutting across the lower neck of the opponent, while stepping out with the right foot. The stroke ends as the right foot lands in a stance with the hips and shoulders square to the front. Furikaburi and kirioroshi, while holding the same stance
Omori Ryu chiburi, ending by bringing the left alongside the right in iaigoshi.
Step back with the right foot
Perform a Shoden nōtō. Then bring the right foot alongside the left foot in iaigoshi
Begin with the left foot and back up three steps.

2. Migi (Facing Right)

Stand erect with the hands at the side.
Take three cleansing breaths
On the third breath, look left and move the hands to the saya and tsukagashira performing koiguchi no kirikata
Begin to turn to the left, starting to push the sword from the saya while turning
As the turn is completed, the nukitsuke is completed with a step forward with the left foot.
Furikaburi and kirioroshi, while holding the same stance
Omori Ryu chiburi, ending by bringing the right foot alongside the left in iaigoshi.
Step back with the left foot
Perform a Shoden nōtō. Then bring the left foot alongside the Right foot in iaigoshi
Begin with the left foot and back up three steps.

3. Hidari (Facing Left)

Stand erect with the hands at the side.
Take three cleansing breaths
On the third breath, look Right and move the hands to the saya and tsukagashira performing koiguchi no kirikata
Begin to turn to the Right toward the front, starting to push the sword from the saya while turning
As the turn is completed, the nukitsuke is completed with a step forward with the right foot.
Furikaburi and kirioroshi, while holding the same stance
Omori Ryu chiburi, ending by bringing the left alongside the right in iaigoshi.
Step back with the right foot
Perform a Shoden nōtō. Then bring the right foot alongside the left foot in iaigoshi
Begin with the left foot and back up three steps.

4. Ushiro (Facing the Back)

Stand erect with the hands at the side.
Take three cleansing breaths
On the third breath, look left over your shoulder and move the hands to the saya and tsukagashira performing koiguchi no kirikata
Step slightly across with the right in front of the left foot
Begin to turn to the left, starting to push the sword from the saya while turning
As the turn is completed, the nukitsuke is completed with a step forward with the left foot.
Furikaburi and kirioroshi, while holding the same stance
Omori Ryu chiburi, ending by bringing the right foot alongside the left in iaigoshi.
Step back with the left foot
Perform a Shoden nōtō. Then bring the left foot alongside the right foot in iaigoshi
Begin with the left foot and back up three steps.

5a. Yaigaki Omote

Stand erect with the hands at the side.
Take three cleansing breaths
On the third breath, move the hands to the saya and tsukagashira performing Koiguchi no kirikata
Push the sword toward the opponent's face, dropping into iaigoshi
Perform a one hand nukitsuke, Cutting across the lower neck of the opponent, while stepping out with the right foot. The stroke ends as the right foot lands in a stance with the hips and shoulders square to the front.
Furikaburi and kirioroshi, stepping forward with the left foot.
Flick chiburi, and begin nōtō, sliding the left foot back
When the left foot is alongside the right and the nōtō almost complete, step back abruptly with the left foot, while drawing the sword, drop into a side stance and block holding the sword vertical with the kissaki within six inches of the floor to protect the right lower leg. Furikaburi and kirioroshi.
Omori Ryu chiburi, ending by bringing the left alongside the right in iaigoshi.
Step back with the right foot
Perform a Shoden nōtō. Then bring the right foot alongside the left foot in iaigoshi
Begin with the left foot and back up three steps.

5b. Yaigaki Ura

Stand erect with the hands at the side.
Take three cleansing breaths
On the third breath, move the hands to the saya and tsukagashira performing Koiguchi no kirikata
Push the sword toward the opponent's face, dropping into iaigoshi
Perform a one hand nukitsuke, Cutting across the lower neck of the opponent, while stepping out with the right foot. The stroke ends as the right foot lands in a stance with the hips and shoulders square to the front.
Furikaburi and kirioroshi, stepping forward with the left foot.
Flick chiburi, and begin nōtō, sliding the left foot back
When the left foot is alongside the right and the nōtō almost complete, step back abruptly with the left foot, while performing a nukitsuke. Furikaburi and kirioroshi.
Omori Ryu chiburi, ending by bringing the left alongside the right in iaigoshi.
Step back with the right foot
Perform a Shoden nōtō. Then bring the right foot alongside the left foot in iaigoshi
Begin with the left foot and back up three steps.

6. Ukenagashi

Stand erect with the hands at the side.
Take three cleansing breaths
On the third breath, move the hands to the saya and tsukagashira performing Koiguchi no kirikata
Step with the left foot across in front of the right, facing 45 degrees to the right
Turn 90degrees to the left swinging the right foot back, keeping the left foot in place and twisting the ankle (creating a spring tension) while blocking overhead with the kissaki to the left at a downward angle.
Raise the left foot up and put it back down in the same place while swinging the sword overhead with the kissaki to the rear to prepare for to strike.
Step the right foot alongside the left foot while performing a kirioroshi with the right hand only, stopping the blade at the forehead of the opponent with the left stopping the sword by gripping the tsuka.
Slide the left foot back while lowering the kissaki to horizontal.
Now place the blade against the right thigh and wipe it upward until the left arm is horizontal at shoulder level, while rotating the hips and left foot to the left.
Release the left hand and prepare the saya for nōtō. The right hand swings the blade across horizontally in front and back into position for a shoden nōtō, rotating the hips forward as the sword is pushed forward, complete the nōtō.
Bring the left foot even with the right in iaigoshi facing the left front
Turn to the front and begin backing to the starting point with the left foot.

7. Kaishaku

Begin facing forward.
Step slightly forward with the right foot and begin pushing the sword out of the saya, slowly and quietly, while maintaining the gaze to downward and directly in front.
As the kissaki clears the koiguchi, step back with the right foot, slightly to the right back, maintaining the gaze, and bring the sword up and behind the head with the kissaki just visible out of the corner of the left eye.
Pause for a few moments.
Step forward with the right foot and cut downward with the sword, rotating the hips and left foot to the left, stopping the sword at what would be the area of the neck of the one being assisted in Sepaku, with the left hand catching the tsukagashira.
Pause, then place the ha on the outside of the right knee, draw the blade upward along the side of the right knee (wiping the blade clean).
Release the left hand and adjust the saya for nōtō.
Turn about 30 degrees to the left with out moving the feet while the right hand levels the blade and swings it horizontally across in front, flip the blade to the rear .
While drawing the tsuka to the front with the mune in position for nōtō, turn to the front, then slowly perform nōtō after the kissaki drops into the koiguchi.
Bring the left foot alongside the right in iaigoshi.
After a pause in zanshin begin backing to the starting point, left foot first, and finish.

8. Tsukekomi

Face Shomen, standing erect
Take a short step with the right foot, then step back abruptly, drawing the sword into an ukenagashi overhead block, and rotating the sword over the head and grasping the tsuka with the left hand (the blade horizontal)
Step forward with the right foot, striking at the “men” level of the opponent while bringing the left foot alongside the right in an iaigoshi stance.
Step forward with the right foot, and strike forward cutting to the waist, bringing the left foot alongside the right foot in an iaigoshi stance.
Step back with the right foot into a hidari jodan stance.
Bring the sword into seigan no kamae
Release the right hand and take a reverse grip on the tsuka. Cup the tsuba in the palm of the left hand.
Turn the sword over and draw the tsuka upward toward the right shoulder, stopping with the tsuba at the front of the right shoulder and the right elbow extended straight to the right. The kissaki is now in the palm of the left hand.
Using the left hand, guide the mune to the koiguchi, allowing the blade to slide on the back of the left hand, between the thumb and index finger. Push the tsuka forward until the kissaki drops into the koiguchi. Finish with the shoden nōtō.
Bring the right foot alongside the left, then after a slight pause, back up to the starting place.

9. Tsukikage

Stand erect facing shomen.
Stepping forward with the right foot, nukitsuke in a slight upward arc, cutting across the underside of the opponent’s forearms.
Step with the left foot, when it is alongside the right, begin the furikaburi, ending it when the left foot finishes the step.
Step forward with the right foot into kirioroshi
Omori Ryu chiburi, ending by bringing the left alongside the right in iaigoshi.
Step back with the right foot
Perform a Shoden nōtō. Then bring the right foot alongside the left foot in iaigoshi
Begin with the left foot and back up three steps.

10. Oikaze

Stand erect facing shomen
Raise up on the toes, grasp the saya and tsuka, bend the knees into iaigoshi, then beginning with the right foot, start forward in a simulated run.
On the fifth step begin to draw the sword, ending with a nukitsuke on the seventh step. Furikaburi on the eight step and kirioroshi on the ninth step.
Omori Ryu chiburi, ending by bringing the left alongside the right in iaigoshi.
Step back with the right foot
Perform a Shoden nōtō. Then bring the right foot alongside the left foot in iaigoshi
Begin with the left foot and back up to the starting place.

11. Nukiuchi

Stand erect facing shomen.
Draw the sword upward and around the left shoulder, reaching up to grasp the tsuka with the left hand and step outward the the sides with both feet at the same time while performing kirioroshi.
Flick chuburi, and shoden nōtō.
Pull the left foot to center and then the right foot.
